Breeds

Cats Scientists are not sure why, or how, a cat purrs. It is not even certain whether a cat controls its purring. Cats living in large numbers on farms form family groups, like the prides of their cousins, the African lions. No other member of the cat family behaves this way. Your pet cat probably hates to get wet. But cats are natural swimmers. Cats were once feared and hated in Europe. They were believed to be connected with witches and the devil. Fear of cats led to the superstition that a black cat crossing your path brings bad luck.

American bobtail

According to legend, bobtails are the result of a crossbreeding between a domestic tabby cat and a bobcat.

American curl

The American Curl is a breed of cat characterized by its unusual ears, which curl back from the face toward the center of the back of the skull.

American shorthair

The American Shorthair is the most popular breed of cat in the United States

Aegean

The Aegean cat is a naturally occurring breed of cat originating from the Cycladic Islands of Greece. Development of this breed started in the early 1990s by breeders in the fledgling Greek Cat Fancy.

Balinese

The breed became quite popular after this, and a number of breeders that began working on perfecting the beautiful Balinese appearance.

Birman The Birman is said to have originated in western Burma, and cats with similar markings are recorded in documents from ancient Thailand.

Brazilian Shorthair

The Brazilian Shorthair is a medium-sized cat of great agility. The breed can be distinguished from the American shorthair by its sleek and elegant appearance. Yet, cats of the breed are not as thin as the Siamese.

Bengal

The Bengal is a relatively new hybrid breed of cat developed to have a gentle and friendly temperament, while exhibiting the markings and body structure reminiscent of the wild Asian Leopard Cat.

Burmese

The accepted eye colour for the breed is gold or yellow. The coat is known for being glossy, with a satin-like finish. As with most short-hairs, it requires no additional grooming. Burmese are a small to medium size breed and tend to be about 4–6 kg in weight.

Chantilly/tiffany

The Chantilly/Tiffany is a feline with a semi-foreign body style and a full semi-long coat. The coat is silky, soft and smooth; the lack of undercoat usually makes grooming simpler than that of cats with an undercoat.

Devon rex

The Devon Rex is a relatively new breed of cat with a sparse, curly, very soft coat similar to that of the Cornish Rex. Cats have three types of hair: guard hair, awn hair, and down hair. The Devon Rex's coat is unusual because there is no guard hair (see Cornish Rex and Sphynx for more information on hair-deficient genetics in cats).

Egyptian mau

The Egyptian Mau is often said to be descended from African wild cats, and a descendant of the cats seen in wall paintings of Ancient Egypt.

German Rex

German Rex is a Breed of domestic cat. They are a medium sized breed with slender legs of a medium length. The head is round with well-developed cheeks and large, open ears. The eyes are of medium size in colours related to the coat colour. The coat is silky and short with a tendency to curl.

Havana brown

Similar to the oriental shorthair, full color cats, also known as non-blue eyed siamese, were known to interbreed with the pointed cats of siam.

Japanese bobtail

Japanese Bobtails thus became the "street cats" of Japan. The Japanese Bobtail is mentioned in Kaempfer's Japan.

Javanese Javanese have a long, silky coat, that comes in a variety of colors. These cats are ranked among the most intelligent breeds of cat, and resemble the Balinese. Javanese are very social cats which will become depressed if they are left alone too often.

 Korat

The Korat is one of the oldest stable breeds of cat. In fact they are often known colloquially as the "Good Luck Cat" and are given in pairs to newlyweds or people of high esteem as a wish for good luck.

Manx

The Manx breed originated on the Isle of Man where they are common. They are called stubbin in the Manx language. They are an old breed, and tailless cats were common on the island as long as three hundred years ago.

Munchkin

The Munchkin is generally described as a sweet-natured, playful, people-oriented, outgoing and intelligent cat which responds well to being handled. The shortness of their legs does not seem to interfere with their running and leaping abilities.

Nebelung

pointed ears sit a top a modified wedge-shaped head that is more pointed than rounded. The overall appearance is of a long, sturdy, well-muscled cat. The soft double coat feels fine and silky; it is a beautiful gray color and is tipped with silver. Males and, to a lesser extent, females have a ruff around the neck. The fur on the tail is longer than that on the body.

Norwegian forest

The Norwegian Forest Cat is a breed of domestic cat native to Northern Europe, and adapted to a very cold climate.

Ocicat

The Ocicat is a new and still-rare breed of cat which has spots resembling a 'wild' cat and the temperament of a domestic animal, named for its resemblance to the ocelot.

Ojos azules

Ojos Azules are held distinct for their deep blue eyes. Unlike the blue eyes seen linked to the genes in bicolor cats and cats with point coloration, both of which suppress pigmentation, this gene is not linked to any certain fur color or pattern, giving the opportunity to have cats with dark coats and blue eyes.

 Oriental shorthair

The Oriental Shorthair is a breed of cat. It is also called a "Foreign Type" cat. This cat combines the Siamese body with a diversity of colorings and patterns.

Persian

The Persian cat is one of the oldest breeds of cat. In Britain, it is called the "Longhair" or "Persian Longhair". A Persian cat without an established and registered pedigree is classed as a domestic longhair cat.

Peterbald

Peterbalds have an elegantly slim graceful and muscular build. They have a long whip-like tail, webbed feet and oval paws that allow them to grasp objects and open levered doorknobs.

Ragamuffin

The Ragamuffin is a long-haired domestic cat similar in appearance to the Ragdoll. Ragamuffins are fairly large cats, queens weigh between 4.54 and 6.80 kg and toms weigh between 6.80 and 9.07 kg.
