What the Justice League Taught Me About Teamwork

Assemble the heroes. Marketing, creative, sales, UX, project management … find the heroes in every

department and make them part of your go-to team.

Be Superman. Superman was the best kind of leader. Decision-making was democratic, but he took

responsibility for the team’s actions.

Speak alien languages. Learn what is important to Sales, Design, UX and so on.

Share their vocabulary and their perspectives.

Translate to relate.

Defend the good. Protect your team. Defend their work.

And spare them from bullshit whenever possible.

Remember they’re human. Your teammates have lives beyond work.

Invest in your team professionally; empathize with them personally.

Be the leader who listens, and you will be a leader

who is listened to.

Forgive. Hawkgirl betrayed the Justice League (and the people of Earth).

The League forgave her, but she struggled to forgive herself. Don’t be like Hawkgirl.

Forgive mistakes, misunderstandings and even failure. In your team, and in

yourself.
