Our Brains

Guess what…

We are wired differently – but how?

Blood Flow – Neural Activity

Men – more in physical and kinesthetic intelligence, and spatial mechanics & abstraction

Women – more in think on and create words, parts that connect them to memories and emotions

Wait there is more….

White & Grey Matter

Men – 6.5 times more Gray matter (processes information locally in the brain) related to cognition

and intelligence than women

Women – 10 times more White matter (connects information between various information processing

centres) than men.

White & Grey Matter

Women move more information among diverse brain centres

Men tend to localise information in 1 or 2 centres.

We are both super smart but in different ways…

Do you notice?

Women tend to engage in lengthy conversations?

Men tend to work more without talking?

Women asking more open ended questions, men being more direct in questioning?

Structures – Prefrontal Cortex

Control centre for emotions…

Develops faster in women – integrate memories and emotions, search for solutions to conflict,

fewer impulse decisions

Men; attention on one thought at a time, they compartmentalise information

Structures – Hippocampus

Significant memory centre in the brain…

Larger in Women – don’t be shocked!

Women are better at reading signals on faces than men do. This could work in your favour during negotiations –

and they can recall things for further interpretation.

Sometimes too many things…

Structures – Amygdala

Alarm System in Brain for Threat or Danger. Yikes! We need it for survival (brain’s most important aim!)

Larger in Men – don’t be shocked!

We behave differently. Women want to talk during conflict or anger, men don’t want to produce any

words…

Let our amygdala’s calm down.

Structures – Neural Connections

Women have four times more connections between the left and right hemispheres – whole brain thinking.

Men have stronger connections within the individual hemispheres. They focus more on a particular task or

role where one or other hemisphere is heightened.

Chemistry

Men produce more chemicals (testosterone and vasopressin) relating to aggression and territoriality.

Women secrete more estrogen, serotonin (calm impulses) and oxytocin (bonding).

Balanced leadership in organisations – male aggression and female rapport building!

Bring it on!

How we lead differently?

Female leaders are more interactive and work towards participative teams. They are more inductive and transformational in their leadership. They are more

descriptive in style.

Male leaders are more transactional and focus more on hierarchy. They are deductive in problem solving with more risk taking. They are more prescriptive in

style.
