Anti-Opioid Drug Available In Texas Without A Prescription

Many Texans’ troubles with drugs starts with a

prescription for a painkiller.

For some, this leads to selling the painkillers, which can result in criminal charges. For some it can lead to overdose.

That’s a rate of 9.4 per 100,000 people, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In 2015, 2,588 Texans died of an opioid drug overdose.

Naloxone, also known as

Narcan, is an anti-overdose drug that is now available at Texas Walgreens pharmacies without a prescription.

A Nasal Spray

Naloxone comes in three forms:

A Prepared Injectable Shot

A Vial That Can Be Injected Via Syringe

Naloxone stops the effects of an overdose for 60 to 90 minutes.

It doesn’t “cure” an overdose, but provides a window of time for the person to receive

emergency medical treatment.
