DESCRIPTION
For my research project I analyzed different Tinder users history in terms of their overall successes and failures in their Tinder matches. Considered who they “like” versus who they “reject”, if there was open communication about their respective cultures and what was the driving factor that lead them to schedule an in person meeting or not. I was hoping to see if my subjects reject a person right away based on their race or apparent social class as well as how well, or if at all, the matches discussed their separate cultural identities.

Research Question
What significance does alternative race/culture have on the “success” of a Tinder formed relationship? Success in this scenario is defined as taking
the “match” beyond technological communication and meeting in person.

Interview Questions What initially makes you “like” a person and vice versa? Do your Tinder selections seem to align with your type? Of your last 10 Tinder matches is there common race? In your communication with a person from a different culture
or race do you find the conversation easy or hard? How so? Have you ever discussed your different backgrounds in a
Tinder conversation? When deciding to meet, what are the driving factors?
What initially makes you “like” a person and vice versa?
They are attractive Looks like a fun
time Wrote an
interesting bio Looks wealthy
•They look sketchy•Not my type •Not many pictures/ no bio
Do your Tinder selections seem to align with your type?
Yes I have a different Tinder type I guess so
Of your last 10 Tinder matches is there common race?
8 out of 10 said YES there is a common race Out of those everyone named their own race
as their common “match” race Except the Asian female who said her
common race on Tinder “matches” is Caucasian
In your communication with a person from a different culture or race do you find the conversation easy or hard? How so?
We have different social cues They came on too strong They didn’t seem interested
I didn’t want to come off in a particular way I was nervous I was going to make a
generalization/ was extra cautious not to offend them in any way
•I didn’t even think about our different cultures •Our personalities just meshed
•I enjoyed talking with someone different than what I am use to
Have you ever discussed your different backgrounds in a Tinder conversation?
9 out of 10 said NO Yes- came out casually and didn’t really
discuss much more than if I had dated anyone of his race before
When deciding to meet, what are the driving factors?
Their appearance If they can hold a conversation If I think I can have a fun time with them If we both want the same things
What I concluded People of different races are more likely to interact
on a technological basis through the Tinder app A new Tinder Type is born where people break
away from their norms and are given a chance to interact
They rarely go past Tinder. Successful Tinder matches are generally of the
same race/culture Attraction and interaction is decided upon in a split
second based on a persons appearance

Development All subjects are still in Denial or Defense
