For about an hour, Akamai outage slowed and in some cases took down popular social & shopping sites. A configuration change to take some DNS servers out of service started to propagate to the production network. This otherwise routine change caused some DNS servers to restart repeatedly.

2012: DATAGRAM INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER FOR POPULAR NEWS SITES DOWN FOR 5 DAYS

Oct. 29: Hurricane Sandy hits NYC, flooding streets and causing power outages to residents and business alike. One such casualty was Datagram which took down popular news sites Gawker.com, Gizmodo and Jezebel with it.

One such casualty was Datagram which took down popular news sites Gawker.com, Gizmodo and Jezebel with it. Nov. 3: Datagram restored services thanks to generators. During the 5 day outage news sites without redundancy in place relied on social media & externally hosted blogs to keep readers informed. Those with redundant setups were able to recover more quickly with the help of their CDNs to mirror their content.
