Today, we’ll talk about…How services should be planned with and for young people; how their rights should always be respected….

Sound obvious?

Think back to when you were a teenager or think about your own teens now (if you have them!)….

What was the wildest or daftest thing you got up to?!

We had a think about some of our own experiences…

Imagine that risk assessment!

So a little about us…

We’re a changing organisation…

A bit about us…

27 year old organisation

Aiming to modernise

Changing the balance of power….

Our vision is to become…

The UK’s Leading Health and Social Care Charity….

But really, that means making sure everything we do gives people full and happy lives….

Introducing our Peer Reviewers…

Today, by way of a conversation, we are going to talk about great support for young people…

oh…

We believe this will change forever how we plan and develop services for younger people….

We commit to...

• No jargon

• Real experiences

• Making you smile

Introducing Heidi Neville…

Why Heidi?

• Typical young person – she knows who she is and what she

wants

• She’s recently…got her first job, new house, qualifications

• She enjoys a full social life

• Cares about her image

• Loves her family…but also enjoys her own space

And…

She has great insight about…

Good and bad support…

Traditional took…

• Sense of purpose and identity

• Freedom and excitement of being young

• Imposed an older person’s life on a younger person

Modern gave…

• Hope and sense of identity

• Full and enjoyable life

• Made Heidi and her family proud

• Enjoys being a young person living in a vibrant City!

A truly independent person…

• Heidi has gone from needing 1-1 support, to none at all!

• We’re now redundant –she doesn’t need us

• We’re very proud of this…

So, lets have a chat and learn from Heidi!

“Why should having a disability mean that you are treated differently to any young person?”

“No one is too disabled, too complex or too challenging to live an ordinary life!”

Let’s get into some real detail…

Respect that I am young!

• Who I live with – People who are my age and I get on with (one-page profiles can help!)

• My house – It should reflect me and my tastes, not look bland and institutional!

• I’m an adult – I’m in control. Help me gain and use life skills – don’t make decisions for me.

• I want experiences – job, qualification, college, holidays….

• Promote my independence – It’s my house, not yours!

Bland, a touch institutional?

Contemporary, individual and young

Socially, how do we really ensure that young people enjoy the same lives as their peers?…

Being young is about having friends, fun and being connected!

• Spending time with people I like

• A young lifestyle – cool clothes, cool nights out, music, television programmes, brands….

• Helping me stay connected – help me find things that will excite me and give me new experiences!

Yes I may need support but respect my dignity and listen to me…

Support for a young person

• A young attitude – support by people who are young,

or young at heart!

• Believe in me – I need people who see my potential and encourage me to be my best

• Get connected – Can you help me meet people, stay connected and do exciting things?

• Give me space – e.g. When I’m at college, I don’t need you breathing down my neck!

• One Page-Profiles – To recruit my staff and help me find the right housemates

• Respect my dignity- Don’t embarrass me or make me feel different

• I’m a changing person – Let me make mistakes, express myself and do new things!

I’d much rather have a poster on my wall than my care plan!!!

Heidi’s hero, Jessie J, sings: “Be true to who you are!” …

Is your support true to the people you support?

Oh and a plea from us, please don’t sit there thinking…

That’s all very well, but not for really people with

really complex needs and profound disabilities

We passionately believe…

That no-one is too disabled or complex to lead a full life.

Thank you
