Treatment = Main revenue generator

The result of this toxic combination of unhealthy lifestyles and focus on acute treatment is an explosion in the number of chronic patients who require regular medical care for the rest of their lives.

That’s why chronic disease treatment now accounts for between 70-80% of healthcare costs in Europe.

”What we have now is a disease industry, an illness industry. We spend almost 20% of GDP on sickness, less than 2% on prevention.”

# 2Satisfy needs of people who

are sick

The Hippocratic Oath, developed around 4th century B.C., aims to set moral standards for the medical profession and protect good medical practice. It required physicians to swear that “I will apply dietetic measures for the benefit of the sick according to my ability and my judgment and…whatever houses I may visit, I will come for the benefit of the sick” (Edelstein, 3).

The Oath is the fundamental guidelines for western medical practice.

Returning to professional healthcare, today I would like to focus on 3 core beliefs that we hold at Philips:

1. Firstly, people should be at the centre of healthcare– we need to empower patients .

2. Secondly, greater focus should be placed on prevention .

3. Thirdly, we need to foster collaboration betweenall stakeholders.

The current system is not designed to do the things that people increasingly want a health-care system to do: to deliver chronic disease management:

 to deliver wellness care. to counsel people when they’re well . to differentiate between serious problems and

problems that need rapid, convenient solutions.
