1 in 10 teens (2.2 Million) experienced major depression in 2005

Older teens were more prone to depression than younger teens.

12% of teenagers ages 16 & 17 faced severe depression in 2004; where it only affected 9% of 14 & 15 year olds, and 5% of 12 & 13 year olds.

Some severely depressed teens self-medicate with 28% using alcohol, 23% smoking cigarettes, and 21% using drugs.

Self-medicating teens without a major episode had 17% using alcohol, 11% smoking cigarettes, and 11% doing drugs.
