Symmetry IQ
• In this tutorial you will learn:– Power scaling overview– What Symmetry IQ is– Features and benefits of Symmetry IQ– Symmetry IQ accessories
Introduction
• Hu-Friedy introduces the Symmetry IQ Multi-functional Piezoelectric Device.
• The versatile Symmetry IQ was designed for Scaling, Restorative and Endodontic procedures.
Power Scaling 101
Let’s take just a few minutes to review the different technologies in the power scaling category.
Power Scaling 101
Power Scaling 101
• There are two general types of power scaling devices on the market today: – Sonic– Ultrasonic (Piezoelectric or Magnetostrictive)
• All power scaling devices use rapidly vibrating, water-cooled tips to remove calculus from the tooth surface and clean within the periodontal pocket.
• The next few slides will illustrate the differences in the technology.
• The most important thing to remember is that tips used for one technology are not compatible with the other technology.

All surfaces active
Ultrasonic - Magnetostrictive
• Functions above the audible range• 29,000 to 42,000 kHz• Ferromagnetic transducer• Elliptical tip movement• All surfaces are active
Magnetostrictive – Active Surfaces
• Magnetostrictive inserts are active on all surfaces but the amount of energy dispersed varies greatly from surfaces.
• The greatest amount of energy is generated from the point of the tip, and the least amount of energy generated on the lateral surface.

Ultrasonic - Piezoelectric
• Functions above the audible range• 29,000 to 32,000 kHz• Ceramic transducer• Linear tip movement• Lateral surfaces of the tip are more active
Piezo Linear Motion
With piezo technology, tips move in a linear motion as shown in this image.
Piezoelectric – Active Surfaces
• Piezoelectric tips are most active on the lateral surfaces.
• For optimal clinical performance and patient comfort, the clinician should adapt the tip to keep the lateral surface adjacent to the tooth surface.

LightweightThe lightweight handle reduces musclestrain and hand fatigue, enhancingclinician comfort.
Symmetry IQ Power Modes
• Symmetry IQ Piezo Scalers feature three color-coded Power Modes (Green, Blue and Orange) to simplify proper power mode selection.
• Power level increases from Green to Blue to Orange
Symmetry IQ 3000Symmetry IQ 4000
Power increases from right to left (green → blue → orange)
Power increases from bottom to top (green → blue → orange)
• Frequency (number of times the tip moves back and forth) remains constant in all power modes (green, blue & orange).
• Amplitude or stroke length (distance the tip moves) varies in each mode.
– Shortest stroke length in green mode and longest stroke length in orange mode.
– The higher the power setting, the longer and more powerful the stroke.
• It is always recommended that a clinician use the lowest effective power setting for the procedure.

Symmetry IQ Power Range Guide
• The Power Range Guide indicates the recommended power mode(s) and settings for each Symmetry Tip.
• Some tips have recommended power settings that span two power modes (for instance, Blue and Orange).
• In these cases, start off in Blue mode and increase to Orange mode when additional power is needed.

Symmetry Cleaning, Care and Maintenance
Cleaning and Sterilization – Control Unit 1. Turn off the power switch and remove
the tip from the handpiece using the Guardian Wrench.
2. Remove the handpiece from the handpiece cord.
3. For the Symmetry IQ 4000 unit, remove all disinfectant solution and perform the auto cleaning/purge procedure.
4. Wipe the control unit, foot control and handpiece cord with a clean cloth dampened with a surface disinfectant. Do not spray disinfectant solution directly on the control unit.
5. The use of an abrasive wipe or cleaning solution may damage the surface finish of the control unit.
6. Treat waterlines with a waterline treatment product, such as Hu-Friedy’s Team Vista, to prevent build up of bacteria in the waterline.
Cleaning and Sterilization – Handpiece
1. Autoclave sterilization is recommended for the handpiece, however, a barrier sleeve may also be used.
2. Clean the outer surface of the handpiece by wiping with a soft cloth dampened with a pH neutral surface disinfection solution (not containing phenols). Do not spray the cleaning solution directly on the handpiece.
3. Wipe debris off the end of the fiber optic light with an alcohol soaked cotton swab.
4. Place the handpiece in a cassette or sterilization pouch and seal.
5. Autoclave the handpiece for 15 minutes at 273°F/134°C.
Cleaning and Sterilization – Tips
1. Clean, disinfect, inspect and steam sterilize before each use.
2. Tips remain in the Guardian Wrench during the complete cleaning and sterilization cycle.
3. Clean using an ultrasonic cleaner or thermo disinfector.
4. Steam sterilize for at least 20 minutes at 250°F/121°C, or 5 minutes at 273°F/134°C.
5. Do not heat above 350°F/177°C.
6. Do not expose to phenols, iodophors or dry heat sterilization.
Waterline Maintenance
• Bacteria from municipal water and bottle systems enters dental units
• Microorganisms grow into thick biofilm colonies and stick to internal waterline surfaces
• Biofilm colonies quickly grow, contaminating treatment water
• Untreated dental waterlines can produce 700,000 cfu/ml bacteria counts in as little as 5 days Bacterial Colonies Growing
New Standards in Water Quality
• The ADA has set a goal of no greater than 200cfu/ml
• The CDC and EPA established a standard of no greater than 500cfu/ml for dental water, and recommend that:
• Office staff flush lines daily• Offices use water treatment
products• Offices regularly monitor
colonies
