Generalized seizures

Generalized seizures Involves both the

hemispheres as well as deeper brain structures.

Consciousness is always impaired.

sudden brief cessation of all motor activity accompanied by a blank stare and unresponsiveness.

Lasts from 5 to 10 sec.

Eyelids fluttering or automatisms.

TONIC – CLONIC SEIZURES

Tonic Phase

Clonic phase • Characterized by alternating

contraction and relaxation.

• Hyperventilation.

• Eyes roll back.

• Client froths at mouth.

• 60-90 sec.

Status epilepticus.

• Continuous , short periods of calm between intense and persistent seizures.

• Muscular contractions that can interfere with respirations.

• Hypoxia, acidosis, hypoglycemia, hyperthermia

EEG

Lumbar puncture

Blood Studies

• Monitor vitals

• Note CNS side effects:blurredvision, slurred speech, confusion.

• Monitor serum calcium

• Monitor for Respiratory depression and CVS collapse.

• Cushion the head

• Loosen anything tight around neck

• Turn on the side

• Nothing orally

• Don’t hold down

• If seizures lasts for more than 5 minutes.

• If there is slow recovery , second seizure or difficulty breathing.

• If there are signs of injury.
