This presentation was produced using the boards displayed during the physiology practical session.

Try to identify the slides before you move to the answers.

Neutrophils

Observe the neutrophil has a•Multilobed nucleus (2-5 lobes)•Transparent cytoplasm with faintly pink coloured granules.

Monocyte

Basophils

Observe that the basophil has•A bilobed nucleus•Cytoplasm full of granules which stain deep blue (basophilic) with H&E.

Lymphocytes

Observe that the lymphocyte•Is the smallest of the white cells (only slightly larger than RBCs).•Has a round densely stained nucleus.•Has a very small amount of cytoplasm compared to nuclear material.

Eosinophils

Observe that the eosinophil has•A bilobed nucleus•A Cytoplasm full of granules which stain bright pink with H&E.

Macrocytic anemia

MCV is increased (Macrocytosis)

•Vitamin B12 deficiency.•Folate deficiency.•Alcohol•Pernicious anemia•Liver disease

Iron deficiency anemia

RBC

microcytic

anisocytosis

poikilocytosis

hypochromic

Hypochromic microcytic anemia

Low MCV (Microcytic), Low MCH (Hypochromic)•Iron deficiency anemia (commonest)•Thalassemia•Congenital sideroblastic anemia

Sickled RBCCan block & clog small blood vessels.
