Patient Navigation: An emerging health related workforce

DESCRIPTION

Amidst changing health services and populations new health related workforces are developing throughout the world. This presentation offers both a world-wide and United States perspective on two emerging workforces, the community health worker (CHW)and patient navigator. Each group share common interests and interactions with nursing professionals and frequently work with them in a variety of health related settings. Five topics - role definition, role development, role preparation, cost benefit analysis and employment opportunities - are used compare development of the CHW and patient navigator. The same five topics are also discussed from the point of view of an oncology nurse navigator.
