What is Scurvy?

• Scurvy is a reaction to your body not getting an efficient amount of Vitamin C

• Also known as Scorbutus, and Ascorbic Acid Deficiency

Who can get Scurvy?

• Anybody can get Scurvy, it is a common reaction among most people who do not eat enough Vitamin C rich foods or do not take multivitamins

Vitamin C

• Also known as Ascorbic Acid, it is an important nutrient for the body to ward of germs and infection

• Vitamin C can be found in most fruits, especially citrus

Symptoms of Scurvy• There are many symptoms of Scurvy• Swelling and bleeding of the gums

(Gingival Hemorrhage)• Often sick• Easily bruised and bleeding• Poor wound healing• Pain and swelling of the joints• Hair and tooth loss• Small bleeding around the hair

follicles (Corkscrew Hair)• Small bleeding under nails

(Periungual Hemorrhage)• Fatigue• Dry, pale skin

• May 2nd is the official scurvy prevention day

• Limes, oranges, lemons, grapefruits, etc. are all welcomed!

History of Scurvy

• Common with sailors and pirates

• Due to long trips with a diet of cured meat, bread, and water

• No fruits or vegetables on board because they would of spoiled easily due to lack of refrigeration

• Wait, pirates?

ARRRGH!

Pirates

• Pirates are most commonly associated with scurvy, due to their speech and the condition itself

• Often used to curse rival pirates or betrayers, by calling them “scurvy dogs”
