Improving Scientific Information Sharing by Fostering Reuse - Presentation at CSHALS 2014 on...

Preview:

DESCRIPTION

Most scientific developments are recorded in published papers and communicated via presentations. Scientific findings are presented within organizations, at conferences, via Webinars and other fora. Yet after delivery to an audience, important information is often left to wither on hard drives, document management systems and even the Web. Accessing the underlying data for scientific findings has been the Achilles Heel of researchers due to closed and proprietary systems. This presentation shows an alternative to sharing scientific information using a Linked Data approach.

Improving Scientific Information Sharing by Fostering Reuse of Presentation Material

!by Bernadette Hyland, David Wood, Luke Ruth, James Leigh

What we’re currently doing earns us a “No Pass“

• We spend considerable time preparing papers & presentations

• Yet important ideas as presentations & papers end up in a CMS or DMS without the data

• Data assessment and verification very challenging

• My ideas show up in presentations … sometimes with attribution … sometimes not

• I have no visibility on who is leveraging my content

In March, a cancer researcher at Amgen pharmaceutical company, based in Thousand Oaks, California, reported that its scientists had repeated experiments in 53 'landmark' papers, but managed to confirm findings from only six of the studies.

….. An internal survey at Bayer HealthCare, headquartered in Leverkusen, Germany, found that inconsistencies between published findings and the company’s own results caused delays or cancellations in about two-thirds of projects.

Callimachus Enterprise supports distributed, in-browser workflow creation, editing and publication using the

Linked Data model.

A data integration platform

Callimachus Enterprise

Helping organizations surface data and collaborate either behind the firewall or

securely on the cloud. !

Used by the Fortune 2000 and US Government agencies to collect, annotate and reuse data on the public Internet and within the enterprise.

Our approach …

User Profile

Document management:!• Documents & folders

associated with user profiles.

• Folders can contain data, documents and Callimachus applications.

• In-browser editing tools are available for many document types.

Social features:!• OpenAnnotation tags

and categories for all resources.

• Timeline of user activities.

• Exposed as Linked Data
