If the use of AOD is causing any continuing disruption in the person’s personal, social,

spiritual, or economic life, and the person does not stop using,

that person is suffering from the Disease of Addiction…

IT IS A FAMILY DISEASE…

Addiction affects not only the addict but also each and every member of the family…Nobody in the family is immune…Parents = huge load of guilt.Spouse = faces problems from all directions.Children = the most pathetic helpless victims in the tragedy.Siblings = carry an unfair share of responsibilities.

• Brain disease

• Spiritual disease

• Emotional disease

A DISEASE that has an overpowering, excessive and

repetitive NEED that exist over mood-altering substance.

and progressive course4. The Disease is permanent, or chronic5. The Disease is fatal6. The Disease is treatable

• Its condition is describable

across a population…

• “SYMPTOMATOLOGY”

Six indicators of addiction:1.An object of desire – sparks

obsessive ideas and drives compulsive behavior

2.Preoccupation – obsession with the object of desire

3.Driven behavior – compulsion to reduce any cravings and satisfy the obsession that drives the addict’s behavior

Six indicators of addiction:4.Lack of control – failure to stop

or cut back; central defining feature of addiction

5.Dependence – physical or psychological state of being totally engrossed of the object of desire, so only that thing can satisfy the desire and fulfillment

6.Negative consequences – harmful consequences

• Rather than being a symptom of an underlying emotional or physical disorder, addiction aggravates those that already exist…

• Other disorders can’t be treated effectively unless the addiction is arrested..

• GeneticGenetic

• PsychologicalPsychological

• SociologicalSociological

• “…because that’s the way it is.” The disease runs a predictable course…• The disease moves inexorably toward greater and more serious deterioration over time unless it is arrested…

1. Experimental

2. Recreational / Occasional

3. Regular Use / Abuse

4. Dependence

• “ Once a person becomes an addict, he or she remains so forever…”• Relapse = another side to the chronicity of the disease..• The safest and most responsible alternative for the addicted person who wants to recover is total abstinence from all mood altering drugs..

• A person whose addiction is not arrested, will eventually DIE from it, and will die prematurely….

• Cause of death: Physical, Accidental, Emotional.

• IT CAN BE TREATED AND ARRESTED!

• There are potential curability…

• Recovery is a process and a lifelong commitment….
