What is Diabetic neuropathy  is the damage to

nerves in the body that occurs due to high blood sugar levels from diabetes.

 People with diabetes can, over time, develop nerve damage throughout the body.

Asymptomatic. Develops slowly  pain, tingling, or numbness-loss of

feeling-in the hands, arms, feet, and legs.

How can we diagnose?

Symptoms & physical Examination.

A lack of reflexes in the ankle.

A loss of feeling in the feet .

Changes in the skin. Drop in blood pressure

when you stand up after sitting or lying down

Investigations

Electromyogram (EMG)

 measures the electrical discharges produced in the muscles.

Nerve conduction velocity tests (NCV)

This test measures how quickly the nerves

in your arms and legs conduct electrical signals.

Filament test.

 Sensitivity to touch

using a soft nylon fiber called a monofilament

these  may reduce your overall risk of diabetic neuropathy by as much as 60 percent.

E.g. smoking, obesity & alcohol.

Relieving pain

Anti-seizure medications. Antidepressants. Lidocaine patch. Opioids.

swelling.
