TECHNOLOGY FOR HEALTH & HAPPINESS
AGENDA Better City, Better Life…. ICT Advantages of ICT Healthcare & ICT Implications of ICT Digital Age Conclusion
BETTER CITY BETTER LIFE……..
The purpose is to help raise awareness of the possibilities that the use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICT) can bring to societies and economies, as well as of ways to bridge the digital divide.
BETTER CITY BETTER LIFE….. ICTs provide solutions to many of the
problems facing cities even as they become magnets for migrating populations as well as contribute to making them more eco-friendly and economically viable.
For many city dwellers, it is nearly impossible to imagine life without ICTs.
From television to mobile phones and the Internet, ICTs have reshaped the world, helping billions of people to live, work and play.
BETTER CITY BETTER LIFE….. ICTs present innovative ways of managing
our cities Smart buildings, Intelligent traffic management, New efficiencies in energy consumption &
waste management, Exchanging information and knowledge and
communicating on the move in an increasingly converged information
BETTER CITY BETTER LIFE…….THE MAJOR DESPARITY While the world’s cities are undoubtedly endowed
with many advantages, the disparities between the haves and the haven't among urban populations is often a vivid reminder that the vast majority is left out of the reach of development.
It is ironic that even in densely populated urban centres countless millions are deprived of access to the means of communication and information that are taken for granted by others.
Along with this growing digital divide, the lack of safe drinking water, sanitation, food, shelter, health care and education are basic needs that calls for the significant improvement in the lives of at least 100 million slum dwellers by 2020.
BETTER CITY BETTER LIFE……SOLUTION IS AROUND THE CORNER By tapping into the huge potential of ICTs to
improve the lives of people and by providing affordable and equitable access to information and knowledge to empower everyone to achieve their aspirations, administrations can contribute towards meeting the rising expectations of an ever-growing population in the world’s cities.
Acting as catalysts for a more productive and better life, ICTs open the door to a myriad solutions that help achieve harmony among the spatial, social and environmental aspects of cities and among their inhabitants.
ICT – THE ENABLER With use of ICT & allied services:
Countries can consider establishing national mechanisms to achieve universal access in both underserved rural and urban areas in order to bridge the digital divide.
To ensure that the benefits of ICT reach the remotest parts of the region, including the dark spots that leave millions unconnected in our teeming cities.
BETTER CITY BETTER LIFE…….ICT AGE What Future holds for us?
We know that there is a better future around the corner.
Thanks to information and communication technologies (ICTs), cities of the future will be safer, cleaner, and more convenient than ever.
Electric cars will plug into a smart electricity grid system when not being used,
Automobiles will communicate with intelligent parking spaces
Perceptive protection sensors will accommodate to our needs and work to keep us safe.
ICT - THE RIGHT WAY On the home front, in-house automatic
health scans and holographic learning centers, robotic cleaners and buildings that actively adapt to our personal tastes and moods are developments that city dwellers can look forward to.
People will be able to exchange information through a simple handshake, using their bodies as conduits to store info on body-based computers, later uploading the information when they arrive home.
ICT – THE DIGITAL AGE If this is the future which is in store for
us……..
………………………..we will have to act now…………….. Keeping in mind that ICT will be the key enabler……………………………….
THINK AHEAD Innovation is moving rapidly. Where is technology taking us? How will we communicate in the future?
The destination is still unclear. Think ahead with us and join the conversation.
Better City, Better Life
THE PROSPECTSAccording to estimates by the United Nations,
55 percent of the planet’s population lives in cities and urban areas.
This presents an enormous challenge for the international community and future policy makers.
The main aim is to bridge the gap in this digital divide & provide a seamless medium for development.
ICT – IS IT THE ANSWER? What can we achieve by this development?
Bridge Digital Divide Measure the digital divide through ICT data
collection and compilation into ICT indices Implement new communication technologies
with the goal of expanding access to ICTs. Use the available resources to help the
optimisation
DIGITAL AGEThe solution to the problem will help build a
foundation of tools that can be used to promote ICT access throughout the world, first by identifying areas of acute need, and then by applying technological solutions to reach unserved users throughout the world.
BETTER CITY BETTER LIFE The areas where ICT can be used to enhance
the living standards: Automobiles Industries Communications Education Healthcare Allied Services
DIGITAL OPPORTUNITY INDEX The Digital Opportunity Index is an e-index
based on internationally-agreed ICT indicators.
This makes it a valuable tool for benchmarking the most important indicators for measuring the Information Society.
The DOI is a standard tool that governments, operators, development agencies, researchers and others can use to measure the digital divide and compare ICT performance within and across countries.
DOI The Digital Opportunity Index (DOI) is based on
11 ICT indicators, grouped in 3 clusters: opportunity, infrastructure and utilization.
The DOI has been compiled for 181 economies for a period of three years from 2004-2006. An even longer time series for 62 leading economies for the period 2000-2006 is also available.
DOI - HIGHLIGHTS The whole population having easy access to ICTs at
affordable prices; All homes equipped with ICT devices; All citizens having mobile ICT devices; Everyone using broadband.

VISION STATEMENT Equitable access to information
technology Ability to use information technology
effectively Quality health promotion interventions
and information for all audiences Ability to evaluate the quality of
information delivered through new media
VISION: EQUITABLE ACCESS
Getting computers into the medical schools Getting computers into the community viz.
Patient & Doctors Getting computers into the home
VISION: EFFECTIVE USE Just supplying hardware and software
is insufficient Need to provide training and technical
assistance on computer and Internet use
Need to provide support staff for computer maintenance and trouble shooting
Need to prepare gate keepers (e.g., teachers) to use technology with their constituents / end users (e.g., students)
VISION: QUALITY INFORMATION & INTERVENTIONS
How do we maintain and improve on the efficiency of current public health interventions without dramatically increasing cost?
How do we contribute to the reduction in the disparity in morbidity and mortality for underserved populations?
How do we take appropriate advantage of advanced communications technologies to accomplish the first two?
VISION: QUALITY INFORMATION & INTERVENTIONS
The dominant training and educational media strategies today are insufficient to address the digital divide.More interactive educational and communication tools are necessary.
IN CLOSING The topic is a complex issue that goes
far beyond access Access is already happening and progress will
continue Public health / health promoters have
to help build the future Not wait for it to happen and react to it
Overcoming the real problems with divides requires as much work for us as for the “wire heads”
There are already many models of success
THE FUTURE
HEALTH CARE INDUSTRY A CHALLENGE, OPPORTUNITY FOR TELECOMTwo specific trends are taking hold in a major
way: The health care industry’s need to use IT and telecom to operate more efficiently, and an aging population’s need and desire to use remote health care monitoring to promote better care for the chronically ill in their own homes.
THE PROMISING FUTUREIn short, the potential offered by ICTs is
virtually limitless. If supported by smart policies and proper standardization, ICTs can be a force for good in creating a kinder, more connected and colorful world!
