CRU at Ball State University organized a bone marrow drive for Be The Match in conjunction with Jim Munroe and The Maze show. Jim Munroe, a leukemia survivor and a recipient of a bone marrow transplant from an anonymous donor, uses magic, illusions, and
mystery to encourage young college students to think about life and their relationship with God in a different way. At the end of the show, students spilled into the lobby area and waited in
line to register to join Be the Match in hopes of someday being matched with a patient in need. Thanks to many of the volunteers
from CRU, we were able to register 433 new members for the Be The Match Bone Marrow Registry in 90 minutes, making it the largest
single bone marrow drive that has ever been done in Indiana!
Because of this event and the overwhelming support from the CRU members to join Be The Match, we are creating a
Be The Match on Campus group at Ball State. This group will be student led, initiate more bone marrow
drives at our school, raise awareness of the need formore young people to step up and join, as well as work
to raise the funds needed to offset the tissue typingand storage fees associated with each registry.
Those joining the registry must be between 18-44 years of age
so it is very appropriate and helpful to have adedicated group on a college campus encouraging
more people to join. Many lives, including the volunteersand those whose lives will be saved as a result of this
effort, will be forever changed for the better.
The nonprofit would use 100% of the prize money to add more people to the Be The
Match Bone Marrow Registry. It costs Be the Match $100 to tissue type and store the
sample each time someone joins the registry. No one is ever turned away due to costs. By
widening the pool of potential life saving donors, many lives will be saved.
