WHAT IS AWARENESS ANESTHESIA?

WHY DOES INTRAOPERATIVE AWARENESS HAPPEN AND WHY ARE SOME PATIENTS AT RISK?

Is important to have highly trained anesthesia professionals involved in your surgery

WHY DOES INTRAOPERATIVE AWARENESS HAPPEN AND WHY ARE SOME PATIENTS AT RISK?

In some high-risk surgeries, such as trauma, cardiac

surgery, emergency cesarean delivery, or in

situations involving a patient whose condition is unstable, using the usual dose of anesthetic drugs could harm

the patient.

CONSEQUENCES OF AWARENESS DURING GENERAL ANESTHESIA

• It varies from person to person;

• The continuum of consequences may be minor such as no psychological consequences or negative effects, to some level of psychological or emotional stress, anxiety, or effects, to a severe level of psychological or emotional injury;

• Some individuals are even diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder

CONSEQUENCES OF AWARENESS DURING GENERAL ANESTHESIA

Mental Trauma

The person MUST talk with a health

provider about his/her concerns.

HOW TO AVOID / PREVENT?

Talking with your anesthetic provider

discuss your anesthesia options

elect the best and safest treatment for you during your operation

HOW TO AVOID / PREVENT?

.

Be open and honest about your medical history, medication

use, and lifestyle habits

The risk of awareness is also reduced by simple steps and good

clinical practice: well-trained personnel; avoidance of paralytics unless necessary; careful checking

of drugs, doses and equipment; good monitoring, and careful

vigilance during the case.

RESULTS

• It may have sufferer an enormous trauma;

• Some patients experience, leading to long-lasting after-effects such as nightmares, night terrors, flashbacks, and, in some cases even suicide;

• Early psychological counseling and support can reduce the amount of harm and chances of developing PTSD.
