What is the SLM?- Smarter Lunchroom

Movement- A smarter lunchroom is one

that nudges kids towards nutritious foods.

-Enhance taste expectations-Use suggestive selling-Set smart pricing strategies

How it works & the evidence- Moving and highlighting fruit increased sales of

fruit by up to 102 percent.- Naming vegetables and displaying the new names

with the foods increased selection of vegetables from between 40–70 percent.

- Introducing a “healthy choices only” convenience line increased the sale of “healthy items” by 35 percent.

- Placing chocolate milk behind white milk increased white milk sales by 46 percent.

HUSSC: SL

• Participate in the NSLP and SBP• Be a Team Nutrition school

– Join free!• Be 6-cent certified• Meet USDA nutrition standards• Meet Smart Snack Nutrition Standards• Provide nutrition education, physical education, and

opportunities for physical activity• All corrective actions completed• Smarter Lunchroom techniques implemented

How to Meet the HUSSC Criteria• Form a school challenge team• Solicit & inform parents, teachers,

school nurses, community members, school admin staff, etc.

• Work with the NDA staff to receive technical assistance meeting the criteria and completing the application

• Seek resources and additional training through organizations such as Institute of Child Nutrition & Action for Healthy Kids

– Complete & submit a SL self-assessment score card

– Review the HUSSC checklist for the award level in which you’re applying. Submit all supporting documentation

– Recipients of the Alliance for a Healthier Generation Healthy Schools Program National Recognition Award may be eligible for a streamlined application process.

Tips for applying- Pull together your team- Review the app and note questions- Review district SWP & list ways schools are

implementing the policy- Can include multiple schools on one app if certain

criteria are met- Same menu and same foods are served- Same nutrition edu, physical education, & physical activity

are provided- Same competitive foods and beverages sold- Each school follows the district SWP
