The Mekong ConstrainThe Mekong Constrain

• Rich water related resources and unique biodiversity and large fisheries • Still limited water infrastructure

• Millions of people depend on capture fisheries and other resources

•Remains among one of the world’s poorest regions (Flood and Drought….)

•Increasing demand for water resources development to reduce poverty and support an increasing population

On 5 April 1995, four countries of Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand and Vietnam signed the

Agreement Cooperation for Sustainable Development of the Mekong River Basin

The Establishment of the Mekong River Commission Secretariat (MRCS)

6Office in Vientiane, Lao PDR Office in Phnom Penh, Cambodia

In order to operate and manage the modern systems for near –real time data collection and management on flood forecasting, data exchange and information dissemination in both the national and regionalcontext, the Mekong-HYCOS project has been established.

Time frame and Project Budget The project has planned for 2007 to 2012 with 3 main steps :

The Inception Phase (1 year) (Jan –Dec 2007)The Construction Phase (0.5 year) (Jan –Jun 2008)Follow-up of the system (3.5 years) (Jun 2008-Dec 2011)
