REQUIREMENT
The Ajman Sewage Private Company Limited (ASPCL) contacted
Azzuro to solve performance problems with an existing biological
odor control system that had previously been installed to treat
extremely high loadings of H2S. Due to the inability of the existing
system to process these high concentrations, significant deposits of
elemental sulphur developed on the synthetic media. This caused
constant clogging of the media, which had an adverse effect on
performance.
The operator had been forced to routinely open up each of the 8
reactors, remove the media packs and tediously clean each media
pack with a high pressure wash and vibrators. This process was
obviously not efficient and it was wasting thousands of man hours
per year on unnecessary maintenance. ASPCL needed a more
capable process and higher quality media that would eliminate this
expensive problem and meet the strict emission requirements.

SOLUTION
The original layout of the system was for 8 biological reactors. Azzuro
was able to exchange the existing media with its Spacious Wire Pac
Media. Only 6 of the 8 reactors were needed to meet the stringent
performance requirements set forth by ASPCL. Not only did ASPCL
solve the emissions and maintenance problems by using the Azzuro
system, they now have 2 reactors left on site to use if needed for any
future expansion of treatment at the facility.
The Azzuro Spacious Wire Pac media has shown excellent results and
is removing 800 to 1.200 kg per day of Sulphur! Due to the unique
structure and design, the Azzuro media promises to never clog and will
not need the constant cleaning like the previous media. The operators
have been relieved of the maintenance associated with this system and
can now focus their efforts on other parts of the facility.

REQUIREMENT Sand Island WWTP (operated by The City and County of Honolulu, Hawaii) contracted with Azzuro in late 2007 to replace their existing carbon scrubbers with the more cost effective Azzuro Biological Odor Control System. Carbon replacement costs had became too much of a burden on the City’s budget at over $100,000/year. The Azzuro system promises to be much more cost effective over its lifespan as the biological system requires no media change out and almost zero maintenance. The Azzuro system needed to be robust and have the ability to handle large sudden spikes of H2S which had been exhausting the previous carbon at a rapid pace. SOLUTION A total of thirteen (13) Azzuro TR36-6 bioreactors were installed to treat over 120,000 cfm of foul air. The foul air originated from Headworks (40,000 cfm/4 reactors), Primary Clarifiers (50,000 cfm/5 reactors) and Solids (30,000 cfm/4 reactors). The system has met performance every step of the way even during sudden spikes of H2S which have become commonplace at the plant. The owner is delighted with the ease of operation of the Azzuro system and obviously enjoying the cost savings that have been provided. The City is working with Azzuro again to find even more ways to optimize their plant and increases savings.

REQUIREMENT The Western Treatment Plant treats about 54% of Melbourne’s sewage. Raw sewage is delivered to the plant via the Western Trunk Sewer (gravity sewer). After a series of manholes, the sewer converted to an open channel. Prior to construction of the odour control facility, a single fan drew foul air from the sewer and vented to the atmosphere via a 30m high vent stack. This dispersion offered by the stack served Melbourne Water’s objective of no odour at the boundary. Melbourne Water’s plans to develop land in the north-east corner of the WTP for residential purposes meant the existing arrangement of the vent stack no longer met it’s objective. Therefore, an odour control facility was built to reduce odourus compounds and reduce the risk of odour complaints from the new residential development. Contractor: John Holland Pty. Ltd.
