Environmental Problems and society

Presented by:

Muhammad Faizan Jamil

Environmental sociology is the study of community in the largest possible sense.

Environmental problems as social problems

Environmental problems are not just problems of Technology, Industry, Ecology and Biology,

Environmental problems are also social problems.

Environmental problems are also for society that threaten our existing patterns of social organization and social thought.

Social Dis-organization Theory

The Anomie Situations in the society

Social in In-equality and our Environment

Social inequality is both a prod uct and a producer of global warming, pollution, over-

consumption, resource depletion, habitat loss, risky technology, and rapid population growth.

• The Material: How consumption, the economy, technology, development, population, and the health of our bodies shape our environmental conditions.

• The Ideal: How culture, ideology, moral values, risk, and social experience influence the way we think about and act toward the environment.

• The Practical: How we can bring about a more ecological society, taking the relations of the material and the ideal into account.

The challenge of Sustainability, Justice and Beauty of Ecology

• How long can we keep doing what we’re doing?

• How much longer can we keep doing what we’re doing with regard to energy?

• What to do?

Get more or use less Or may be do both

Get More Approach

About 33 percent of the world’s energy supply comes from oil, the most of any source. Coal and peat are next at a combined 27 percent, followed by gas at 21 percent. Six percent is nuclear energy and 2 percent is hydropower.

we’re up to 81 percent of our energy coming from fossil carbon.

Get into less Damaging Natural Recourses

in 2009, Spain generated 14.3 percent of its electricity with wind power.

Worldwide, 38 gigawatts of new wind turbines went up in 2009 alone.

Global Warming

Particulates and acid rain

Particulates and acid rain

• Big cities and their surrounding face the hazard of fine particulates in the air.

• These particulates much smaller in size.• Much smaller than the diameter of human

hair.• Fine particulates increase heart attack.• Decrease lung capacity.• In Amerca 15% people died before premature.

• According to 2006 report, 160,000 americans die premature every year due to fine particulates.

• Acid rain also another big issue.• Due to acid rain decline in the population of

some fish, frogs, plant stress and dieback in many forest.

• Acid rain direct damage the plant tissue.

Causes of particulates and acid rain

• Dust mainly released because of poor combination in cars, trucks, power plants, wood stove and outdoor burning.

• Fossil fuels.• Coal used for electric generation.

Threats to land and water

• Soil erosion is only one of many serious threats to farmland.

• Gain in crop production was due to irrigation.• Irrigation can also salinize soil.• Irrigation can also waterlog poorly drained

soil.• Much of the freshwater that remain is badly

polluted.

Environmental justice.

Environmental justice for all.

Who gets the bads?

• Both race and social class were significant factors.

• Minority students tend to be located in areas with high levels of airborne toxics.

• People of color face much higher odds that their homes are located near a toxic chemical plant.
