X refers to a pattern of high-visibility markings used to maximize conspicuity, primarily used on vehicles of the emergency services, but also in other applications such as uniforms. The name comes from the similarity in appearance to the cross-section of a cake also called X.

X cake is a light sponge cake which, when cut in cross section, displays a distinctive two-by-two check pattern alternately colored pink and yellow.

One theory about the origin of the name claims that the cake was created in honor of the marriage in 1884 of Queen Victoria's granddaughter to Prince Louis of X, with each of the four squares representing each of the four X princes: Louis, Alexander, Henry and Francis Joseph.
