HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

There was not a cure for cancer and he had his legs amputated. That was the reason why he ran the marathon of hope.

CHILDHOOD

He loved all sorts of sports – rugby, soccer, diving etc. But, he was very short so he had to work harder than other kids his age. He was very competitive and had a lot of determinations.

SCHOOLINGHe graduated with honours from Port Coquitlam

Senior Secondary School (which was later renamed Terry Fox Secondary School in his honour). He loved basketball in junior high and played guard. He was only 5 feet tall then but he kept training. By grade 10, he was one of the best guard then.

In grade eight, his physical education teacher suggested Fox should try out for cross country running. At that time he completely had no interest in running but Terry started training anyway, because he had so much respect for his coach and wanted to please him. He found the running exhausting but at the end, his coach had called him a man. And he kept that to the end of his days.

DREAMSHis dreams is to raise money for cancer

research because he had his leg amputated because of cancer and he wants to help other people with cancer.

DEATH

He developed pneumonia in June 1981 and went into coma on June 27th. He died on the 28th at 4:37 a.m. , his favourite time for running. He died exactly one year after the legendary run and exactly one month from his birthday.

CONTRIBUTION TO SOCIETY

He had raised a lot of money for cancer research and in the end, he raised millions of dollars. And he is now known to everyone because of the Marathon of Hope. He is also remembered by everyone and a monument was built for him,

A LITTLE MORE ABOUT THE MARATHON OF HOPE

Terry began by dipping his leg in the Atlantic Ocean at St. John's, Newfoundland on April 12, 1980. He intended to dip it in the Pacific Ocean when he arrived in Victoria, British Columbia. He also filled two large bottles with Atlantic Ocean water; his plan was to keep one as a souvenir and pour the other one into the Pacific. He also intended to fill another jug of water with water from the Pacific Ocean. He was going to run about 42 km (26.2 miles) a day, the distance of a typical marathon. Even today, people all over the world run this non-competitive- no winners marathon.
