We have a few monthsto go before nextyear’s Academy

Awards, and it’s clearthat there is a lot of

competition.

There are a number oftalented women who

are strong contendersfor Academy Awards.

Two stand-out performanceswere those of Natalie

Portman in Jackie and EmmaStone in La La Land, but there

were a number of otherwomen who made a huge

impact on the silver screenthis year.

Here are a few actresses whodeserve some serious

recognition for their roles:

SallyHawkins

inMaudie

In this biopic of Canadian folkartist Maudie Dowley Lewis,

Sally Hawkins delivers astellar performance. This

performance may even topher Golden-Globe winning

role in Mike Leigh’s filmHappy-Go-Lucky.

Aisling Walsh’s Maudiepremiered at the Telluride

film festival and immediatelycaused quite a buzz. While

the film didn’t generate muchmore buzz in Toronto, Sally

Hawkins’ performance isundeniably excellent.

She conveys the effects ofMaudie Dowley Lewis’

juvenile rheumatoid arthritiswith extreme accuracy but

doesn’t led the afflictionoverpower the role.

Sônia Bragain

Aquarius

A Brazilian actress has notbeen nominated for a best

actress Oscar since FernandaMontenegro was nominatedfor her role in the 1998 film

Central Station.

Many are hoping that SôniaBraga is the next Brazilianactress to be nominated. In

Kleber Mendonça Filho’s filmAquarius, Braga plays a

widowed and retired musiccritic named Clara who is

being driven out of her home.

English-speaking audiencesbest know Sônia Braga for

her Golden-Globe nominatedrole in Kiss of the SpiderWoman. She has worked

steadily since that role buthas truly outdone herself in

Aquarius.

Rebecca Hallin

Christine

Rebecca Hall has had a steadyacting career for 20 years,

wowing audiences with herroles in The Prestige, TheTown and Vicky Cristina

Barcelona.

While all of these roles wereexcellent, Hall’s role in Christine isthe most complex and demanding

role she’s ever had to take on.Antonia Campos’ dark character

study focuses on ChristineChubbuck, a news anchor who

committed suicide on live TV in the70s.

Hall takes on the role in full force,boldly digging into Chubbuck’sinsecurities and portraying an

empathetic portrait of her

AllisonJanney

inTallulah

Allison Janney excels at prettymuch everything she does, but

surprisingly, most of her roles havebeen on the small screen.

In fact, she has now received fourEmmys for the West Wing. Bit she

hasn’t been largely recognized in afilm until now.

Tallulah is an indie film that waslargely overlooked, but one

standout role was that of Janney.She plays an academic mother whois forced to befriend a stranger whoclaims to be the pregnant girlfriend

of her estranged son. Even if themovie didn’t receive much praise,

Allison Janney deserves quite a bitof it.

As numerous women are gettingdemanding roles and playing themto a tee, we hope to see these four

women and many more receivenominations in 2017.
