An Enhanced Visual Workbench for
OGSA-DAI
Rob Baxter
OGSA-DAI is…
• a powerful, robust, stable open-source platform enabling
Internet-scale data integration for e-Research!
• an “important [e-Research] software toolkit” (Atkins 2010)
OGSA-DAI has…
• a powerful execution engine for data workflows
• a “kit of parts” of some 120+ server-side data access,
processing and transformation components
• a client toolkit offering a straightforward Java API to
application developers
• a world-wide user base and active open-source community
• Hmm, OK, I’m convinced… how do I use it?
Using OGSA-DAI?
• Did we mention the client toolkit offering a straightforward
Java API?
• A Java API…? OK… And…?
• Well, how about a new data-intensive workflow language
called DISPEL?
• Hmm, that sounds potentially interesting, but…
what I really want is a visual programming tool, an IDE
Excellent! Can I have it now?
• The ADMIRE Workbench is a public beta
• It needs a usability overhaul, some TLC, better docs
• That’s what this project is all about!
• “An Enhanced Visual Workbench for OGSA-DAI”– Starting August 2011– Until mid-Dec 2011– Providing a learnability ramp for data-intensive e-Research
