Sign Language Translator Using Glove

Major Project

Why did we take up this project ?

There are many impaired people’s in the world .The communication between deaf/dumb

and normal person is always challenging task. This creates an extremely little space for

them with communication which is essential part of human life. Sign language is the

main communication medium of the impaired people . It uses gestures instead of sound

to elaborate their meaning. So our project aims to bridge this gap by enabling

communication between dumb/deaf people on the one hand and normal people on other

hand by introducing an inexpensive electronic device that translates the sign language

to text and speech. This proposed system will be able to recognize different hand

gestures .In this system sign language will be captured, recognized and translated to

speech and text for the benefit of normal and blind people. The use of a support device

in the communication for a deaf-mute person may give him/her a better quality of life to

work in basic situations.

What is the prime idea ??

Content Layout

Interfacing microcontroller with flex sensor and accelerometer

Accelerometer will capture the hand movement.

Making the the system wireless.

Text and audio form of hand gesture will be produced on LCD and speaker.

Overall Architecture

Power supply

Power supply is a reference to a source of electrical power that

supplies electrical to an output load. Here in our application we

need a 5v DC power supply for all electronics involved in the

project.

The main components used in our power supply are

•4 IN4007 diodes

•1000uf capacitor

•NMJ7805 regulator

•220ohm resistor

•Step down transformer

First of all we use a step down transformer to step down the voltage from the main power supply. It follows

up with a full wave rectifier circuit to convert AC supply to DC. Then we use a regulator to smoothen up the

DC supply.

Advantages

1) This is a technology of the future which can be of great utility.

2) In future this project is useful for deaf and dumb people those cannot communicate with normal person. It is also

useful for speech impaired and paralysed patient means those do not speak properly.

3) This system eliminate the barrier in communication between the mute community and the normal people by

discarding the need for an interpreter. It facilitates effective realtime communication.

4) It also provide communication between dumb and blind.

Limitations

1. Accurancy and processing of system may be slow. The data captured by the sensors may not be accurate.

Even a small error in capture may lead to bizarre consequences.

2. We will be developing only one hand's glove. More notably, users with differently sized hands/fingers, unable

to fully control their fingers may, or unable to comfortably turn their wrists in all directions may have some

difficulty in operating the glove. Flex sensor may not be at correct position because of difference in hand size.

3. These gloves cannot capture the facial expression.

4. Additionally, many deaf people may not want to carry around the glove or may find that the computer

processing is too slow or unnatural.

Future scope

1. The glove output is limited to a single hand and since hands differ in size and freedom of motion, therefore work can be done on

this glove so that the wearable hand glove mouse can be flexible for every hand size .

2. . These gloves cannot capture the facial expression..So device can be develop that can capture facial expression

also.
