What does Shear Stress mean?

shear stress,  force tending to cause deformation of a material by slippage along a plane or planes parallel to the imposed stress .

What Physics Says:

By the language of Physics, shear stress is a stress state in which the shape of a material tends to change (usually by "sliding" forces -- torque by transversely-acting forces) without particular volume change.

EASY TO KNOW :

Symbol & Unit

Usually Shear Stress is dinoted by :

Unit : Pascal

TYPES

Basically there are 2 types of Shear Stresses

a) Horizontal Shear Stressb) Transverse Shear Stress

Horizontal Shear Stress

How it works in a wooden beam

Shear Stress on Element

Shear Stresses in Beams

Formulae:

From figure,we can notice that,a) There will be Shear Stresses acting at every cross section of the beam and the resultant shear stress at every cross section what gives a shear force.b) At top phase the shear stress(horizontal) is tends to zero .
