What is Paint?Paint is any liquid, liquefiable, or mastic composition which after application to a substrate in a thin layer is converted to an opaque solid film. It is most commonly used to protect, color or provide texture to objects.

What is paint made of?• Pigments• Resins• Solvents• Additives

Pigments

• Pigments give color to paints• Both natural and synthetic, exist• average particle size can vary from 0.2 to 10

(micro meters)

Pigments

• True pigments exhibit capacity or hiding power in varying degree whereas extenders are practically transparent

Pigments

Resin (Binder or Film – Former)

• Resins helps paint dry and adhere• responsible for the protective and general

mechanical properties of the film

Resin (Binder or Film – Former)

• Convertible Resins• Thermosetting Resins (STOVING RESINS)• Non-convertible Resins

Solvents (Thinners)

• Solvents make paint easier to apply• low viscosity, volatile liquids• include petroleum mineral spirits and aromatic

solvents such as benzol, alcohols, esters, ketones, and acetone

Additives

• Additives serve as everything from fillers to anti-fungicidal agents

Example Black Stoving PaintPigment:

Carbon Black 1.6%

Resins:

Coconut Oil 49%

Alkyd Resin 10%

Melamine Resin 19%

Solvents:

Xylene 15%

Ethylene Glycol 2%

Iso-Butanol 3%

Additives:

Dispersing aid 0.4%

Types of Paint• Primers • Sealers • Undercoats • Finishing Coat • Stoppers and Fillers

Paint Manufacturing Process

1. Making the paste2. Dispersing the pigment3. Thinning the paste4. Canning the paint

Paint Manufacturing Process

Equipment• Attritor• High Shear Mixer

Attritor

• The material to be ground and the grinding media are placed in a stationary, jacketed grinding tank

• shearing and impact forces

• Media= Flint

Attritor

High Shear Mixer

• Mixes fluids having higher viscosities

• Used in paint industry and edibles like chocolates and ice cream
