Intelligent Transportation System & it’s Application on Eastern Freeway
What is ITS ?
Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), sometimes called
intelligent traffic systems, apply communications and
information technology and traffic management system to
provide solutions to the congestion as well as other traffic
control issues.
Benefits of ITS
Reduced congestion.
Time savings.
Reduced fuel consumption and emissions.
Reduced frustration.
Reduced road accidents
Increased safety.
Enhanced economic productivity.
Traffic Scenario In Mumbai
200 cars and 300 two-wheelers added
every day
Up to March 2010, 57,846 two-
wheelers and 30,118 cars had been
added to the Mumbai’s traffic.

EASTERN FREEWAY
Connects P D'Mello Road in South Mumbai to the Eastern
Express Highway (EEH) at Ghatkopar.
It is 16.8 km long and its estimated cost is Rs14.36 billion.
The Eastern Freeway was built by the Mumbai Metropolitan
Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and funded by
the Central Government through the Jawaharlal Nehru
National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).
Construction was contracted to Simplex Infrastructure Ltd.

Delhi's first high speed camera
Speed monitoring camera were installed
by Delhi Traffic police on a open stretch
between new tunnel which lead to
south Delhi, Indira Gandhi International
Airport.
It was seen that more than 600 vehicle
were caught for speeding within 4 hr.
After installing high speed cameras
there is considerable decrease in rate of

Implementation of High Speed Cameras in
Eastern Freeway
These cameras should be installed on
elevated portion of eastern freeway and
near the refineries and in tunnel and
entries provided in freeway.
Since it is a freeway and major portion of
road is elevated and if there is any
accident or stealing activity we can keep
watch and we can take necessary actions.

to address the issues of traffic congestion, safety etc.
utilizing the latest traffic management technology
This variable messages sign has been installed in various
part of Bangalore city.
Installed to inform the motorists about:- Diversions due to
natural calamities like flooding, water clogging, fallen
trees, electrical poles,Man made diversions like strikes,
road blocks, agitations etc.
Such information will enable motorists to plan their route
based on current information.
Warning system

Implementation of Warning System on
Eastern Freeway
This system should be
installed on entry, exit,
outside and inside of tunnel
of freeway and somewhere
near middle portion of
freeway.
Emergency call known SOS
The system based on Voice
Over IP (VOIP) technology is
made up of SOS Call Boxes
Set out along the roadway,
preferably in the emergency
platforms and tunnels and
elevated portion.

Implementation of Incident
Management in Eastern Freeway
SOS can be installed on elevated
portion near refineries or curve
and inside the tunnel on eastern
freeway.
Immediate response team should
be such that, they will be at the
accident site within 10min from
the time they get a call from SOS.

Implementation of Smart Roads in
Eastern Freeway
These type of paints can be used not only on eastern freeway but also on any highway in India.
This will save the electricity required for lamps ,will be attractive and will also keep driver active.
