Spring Asphalt Pavement Conference

Los Angeles County Department of Public Works

Pavements were structurally sound.

Pavements were in fair condition (PCI=70s).

Distresses were slight to moderate in severity, occurring intermittently, not extensive, no or slight rutting.

Good skid resistance.

Quick return to traffic desired due to limited access and high traffic volumes.

High production/placement rate.

Reduce work zone exposure time to enhance worker safety due to high traffic speeds.

Pre-paving meetings are very valuable. Require in your special provisions.

Roadway geometrics affect placement. Require submittal of a “pull-plan.”

Perform prep work in advance of contract.

Schedule during favorable weather. Thin lifts cool fast.

Importance of plant inspection.

Machine-placement only. Use other mixes for hand work areas.

Micro-mill (vs. cold mill) existing pavement.

Ensure the quantity is large enough to be economical.

Very smooth ride quality.
