County and District Resources

O Information Now (iNow)- is a program that allows parents to review information related to grades, attendance, homework assignments, discipline records and other student data from the current year.

O Canvas- is an easy-to-use, cloud-based learning management system (LMS) that connects all the digital tools and resources teachers use into one simple place. It integrates seamlessly with hundreds of apps, empowering teachers and students with countless tools to make teaching and learning easier and more fun.

O My School Bucks- is for paying for lunches online.O Office 365- in order to help our students prepare for a

successful year, the county provides Office to every student free of charge.

Community Resources

Community ResourcesO Elmore County Extension Office- a program that helps

people and communities improve their quality of life and economic well-being.

O Wetumpka Area of Commerce- is a community-based business for visitors and newcomers to Welcome them to the town. They host many events and have many resources available to the community.

O 21st Century- This program supports the creation of community learning centers that provide academic enrichment opportunities during non-school hours for children.

O Elmore County Resource Center- is a place to get information on and additional resources such as; pregnancy center, AA meetings, DHR, shelters, and food pantries.

State Resources for Referral & Evaluation

O A “referral” in the context of special education services is a process asking the school district to evaluate a student to decide if the student qualifies to receive special education services

O An Evaluation is defined regulations as procedures used to determine whether a child has a disability and the nature and extent of the special education and related services that the child needs.

O State ensures and provides IEP, IFSP and 504, determination and compliance per IDEA.

How each resource can help parents of learners with exceptional learning needs

How each resource can help Parents:

O Resources offer parents and families many aids to assist them in providing the best of special education services.

O Cook County has developed a comprehensive plan in accordance with the individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA 2004) and the plan is on file at the Cook County Special Education office. The plan assures that all children with a disability will receive a free appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment.

O Community Resources can provide parents of children with disabilities with information, training, assistance, and support.

O States and school districts must follow IDEA’s definition, they also may add details to guide decision-making about children’s eligibility. That’s why its important to know what your state and local policies are.

Individual/Small Group Setting (Tutoring)

1) In individual and small group settings services are provided by special education teacher.

2) Sometimes small group instruction is also taught in conjunction with a regular education teacher.

3) In small group settings there could also be peer tutors, paraprofessionals or dedicated aids.

4) Small group settings can include reading classes with services provided by reading specialists.

5) Individuals may receive service by Speech Pathologist for speech services.

6) Individuals may also receive service by Occupational Therapist for occupational needs related to motor skills.

7) Social workers often provide small group setting service.8) Psychologists provide individual psychological services.9) Art therapists provide individual art therapy services.

Homework help or tips for exceptional learners

Homework help or tips for exceptional learners

O Homework will be started in class to help ensure that students understand key concepts of the assignment or project.

O Parents should establish a homework routine with their child at the beginning of the year.

O Parents will be provided with frequent written communication about homework, projects, and upcoming tests or quizzes.

O Parents should ask their child daily if they have homework.O Students may work in pairs or small groups to complete

homework assignments. O Study skills will be taught throughout the year, posted

online, and sent home to parents for quick reference.

ConclusionO Parental support is an integral part to student

achievement.O Support for parents is available through district,

community, county and state resources.O Establishing parental understanding on how to utilize

the resources that are available for learners with exceptional needs helps further ensure student success.

O Course guidelines for homework will be clear and consistent.

O Parents will receive frequent communication about homework, projects, tests and upcoming quizzes.

O Supporting parents and helping ensure involvement is essential in creating a positive learning environment.
