What are cyber-infrastructures in the Digital Humanities? France and

other countries as case studiesPierre Mounier

Centre for open electronic publishing

What are cyberinfrastructures ?• “a layer of information,

expertise, standards, policies, tools, and services that are shared broadly across communities of inquiry but developed for specific scholarly purposes : cyberinfrastructure is something more specific than the network itself, but it is something more general than a tool or a resource developed for a particular project, a range of projects, or, even more broadly, for a particular discipline.”

Infrastructures are a mix of hardware and software

Infrastructures are highly connected

But what are they built upon ?

Infrastructures are made to be built upon

Infrastructures in national history

• Railway : SNCF• Power : EDF (1946)• Telecommunications : P&T(1870)• TV and cinema : SFP (1975)• Science : CNRS (1939)• And so on : CNES, CNL, CNC, INSEE, CINES, INIST,

IN2P3… all are « national » (institutes, societies, or centers) and more or less dependant from national administration
