INTRODUCTION:

• Tighra reservoir was constructed in the year 1929 on Sank river to fulfill the water supply of the Gwalior.

• So, It is the life line of Gwalior city. • It is situated about 20 km west of Gwalior city. • Besides supplying drinking water, the reservoir

is also used to culture fishes by the fisheries department and for irrigation purpose.

OBJECT OF THE TOPIC

PARAMETERS:• TEMPERATURE (OC)• TRANSPARENCY (cm)• TURBIDITY (NTU)• CONDUCTIVITY (µS/cm)• pH • DISSOLVED OXYGEN (DO) (mg/lit)• TOTAL HARDNESS (mg/lit) • CHLORIDE (mg/lit)• ALKALINITY (mg/lit)• NITRATES (mg/lit)• PHOSPHATE (mg/lit)

OBSERVATIONS:

Physico-chemical analysis of the water of reservoir was carried out during November 2010 to October 2011 to assess the water quality of the reservoir.

CONCLUSIONS:• The desirable pH of drinking water is 7 to 8.5 (WHO,

1984). The average pH of the Tighra reservoir varied from 6.85 to 7.72 .

• It means that the water of Tighra reservoir is suitable for drinking purpose and is under the standard range.

• The total hardness of Tighra reservoir was between 66.25mg/lit and 137 mg/lit which was under permissible limits.

• This indicates that the water of Tighra reservoir is suitable for drinking purpose.Optimum hardness for fish culture has been reported to be around 150 mg/lit (Das1996). Accordingly, the water of Tighra is suitable for fish culture.

• Chloride concentration ranged between 11.3 mg/lit and 40.7 mg/lit.

• Low chloride contents indicate that the water is not polluted and is safe for drinking purpose.

• On the basis of the present study of physico-chemical, it can be concluded that the water of Tighra Reservoir is safe for drinking purposes.

• In addition, the study indicates that the water is quite suitable for fish culture and by adopting new and better management and scientific approach the production of the fish can be augmented.
