TRMA 585 P1: DEVELOPING A PROFESSIONAL ONLINE IDENTITY

SPRING 2012

ONLINE IDENTITIES, PERSONAL BRANDING, SOCIAL MEDIA

LINKEDIN

• As LinkedIn continues to grow, the importance of networking and making contacts in our field will bear fruit. So, for internships we should be able to connect and meet people who will connect us to others interested in our field. From there we just might connect with future employers.

ONLINE PRIVACY

What the digital/cyber world has opened is not new to mankind…it is quite a bit more stealth and invisible, but isn’t that where we can intervene? Educators, parents, (aunts and uncles, too) can intercede by helping the young people learn what is appropriate to post. Parents tend to “helicopter” and intercede for their children instead of giving them the skills to succeed and the freedom to fail (thus learning from their mistakes). I believe the issues that we are up against fall into our job description as counselors, teachers, administrators and foremost, parents. We will be able to help the “younger” generation move in the right direction with this type of proactive preparation.

TWITTER #TRMA585

http://twitter.com/macnagel In fact the "teasing" or the witty comments are a little like creating a great Super Bowl commercial! One that hooks, leads others to something great (a cool article or another website like our private practice ) and maybe even adds a little humor so those reading it don't forget it!

GOOGLE PLUS (G+)

My ultimate question for all of the social networking sites, is this really a tool that has to have a steep learning curve? You start canceling out chronological generations because of that. Not that they can't learn...they really just don't want to "waste their time”…. The entire shift not only has educational implications but also social implications that make me realize in spite of concerns, I have to engage with these programs. I like the upgrades that Google + is offering and now I just wonder how often and quickly we will be making social media "upgrades" (or changing who we use, FaceBook, Twitter, or Google +?) because they are constantly changing. Who or what will be the next "upgrade"?

PROFESSIONAL FACEBOOK PAGES

http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1170901226

I’m really used to it for personal updates and even with privacy settings I think it doesn’t offer too much as a professional page?

LEARNING FROM MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS & ORGANIZATIONS

If I could develop a page similar to Dr. Deborah Serani (who does some self disclosure in her book about her depression) or a page like Will Baum... Both of these pages are packed with educational insight, quizzes for symptoms, and just general psycho-educational links to help anyone considering

I think Twitter is really quite “genius” when used appropriately and can really be a ‘godsend’ to therapists. By linking to the pages, education provides those who maybe looking for insight or help to grow and learn with the assistance of these Tweets….

BLOGS: BLOGGER, WORDPRESS, TUMBLR, POSTEROUS

“That is an excellent point about privacy in our profession. I connected it to the number of law enforcement personnel that I know. Like these particular guys, and like you mention, its frustrating that we have to have a bit of a pseudo life when it comes to certain topics that we are passionate about. It will be a matter of learning to live with that and learning to filter our words that we share with others.”

“I would hate to have to have two online identities; one professional, and one pseudonym just to participate openly in topics that matter to me, but it is a fact of our profession that we may have to be overly concerned with our online privacy. “

MANAGING YOUR ONLINE IDENTITY

I don't really have the time to do this, but on the other hand I almost don't have the time not to! I'm just fitting bits and pieces in to use all Hootsuite has to offer. One thing that I absolutely love is that they send a weekly email with pointers to help you utilize everything they have available. I figure if I take advantage of that by the time I finish this program I be in a position to use it all!

Who uses HootSuite?

WEBSITES & DOMAIN NAMES

I'm bookmarking all of them too and plan to work on a website over the summer, so I will work out all of my kinks and tweaks on all of this media...while I get ready to launch!

HAVING AN IMPACT

I wrote about relationships and the importance of building them and using them reciprocally to make the impact we want.

Whether it is using the skills of the people in these relationships to help build on our social media sites, or to meet an ever growing circle of friends who can assist us while we assist them is the key here.

Growth in business is always related to relationships.

GOALS & STRATEGIES

The key is learning to tap the creativity of the people in our close circle of friends and acquaintances... Really it is all about relationships and learning to build these relationships into situations that will impact our outcome. Now if I can just learn to create the balance that let's these people use my skills also. We all will be impacting each other and growing our businesses. But foremost, I certainly hope we can use foresight and talent to sincerely help each other out.
