Connecting Classrooms

In the 1830s, wealthier cit izens of Beckerek (Zrenjanin) wanted to provide education for young people in the city. They set the idea to open a school.

In order to obtain equipment for the school, the rich cit izens donated money and goods. Great help was also coming from the church.

The school was finally opened in 1846.

At that time , the schooling lasted 6 years and the teaching language was Hungarian, although most of the students were the Serbs.

Two years after the opening , in 1848, schooling was interrupted due to the Hungarian revolution, and the school was converted into hospital.

In 1850 Grammar School started working again, but with a bit of a change.

The schooling lasted 4 years and the teaching language was German.

A new period of Zrenjanin Grammar School began in the first decades of the 20th century. The old school system was replaced after Vojvodina had got separated from Austro-Hungarian empire and united with Yugoslavia.

The World War 2 managed to stop the developing of the Grammar School, and then in 1941 to split it into 3 schools: Serbian, German and Hungarian. German army founded a mil itary storage in the building where the school used to be.

Consequently, the teaching was held under difficult circumstances, there were diseases and lack of teachers.

In spite of this, schooling was restored several years after, thanks to commitment and dedications.

Nowadays , Zrenjanin Grammar School is one of the biggest and most successful grammar schools in whole Serbia.

The school has 1291 pupils, 42 classes and three departments :
