(1660-1689)

The English monarchy was restored when Charles II of England (above) became king in 1660.

HISTORICAL PERIOD

• 50% of men are functionally literate (a dramatic rise)

• Factories begin to spring up as industrial revolution begins

• Coffee houses-where educated men spend evenings with literary and political associates

• In many ways it is the modern eras's birth, science, commons powers, mass media, and orders

STYLE

BALDRIC

A diagonal sash that went across the body that would hold the sword, display metals and show status.

CANNON

Bunches of ribbon loops affixed at the knee, worn between 1660 and 1670.

PERIWIG

At first it was made to look like natural hair, but eventually an artificial effect was cultivated.

WAISTCOAT

A sleeveless vest that was worn under a coat and was the same length as the coat.

LITERATURE TIMELINE

Neoclassical Literature is marked by comedies, influenced by the French theater and marked by

Neoclassical art is a form of art harkening back to the grandeur of ancient Greece and Rome.

The period is known for its fanciful and graceful asymmetric ornamentation in art and architecture.
