Human SKELETON

The bones in your body make up a framework called human skeleton .

The human skeleton has four basis :-They are skull, spine, ribs and limbs .

An adult have 206 bones and a new baby have 300 bones .

As adult grows many of the bones fuse together.

3

Functions of the skeleton

The skeleton has four main functions :-

They are

Support

Protection

Movement

Making blood cells

4

Support

It provides hard framework to support internal organs and holds upright .

Your body has a number of soft organs & muscles. It is necessary to have a hard framework to support these parts,

otherwise body will collapse.

5

Protection

It provides the soft and delicate organs like brain, heart, lungs, spinal cord etc .

The bones protect the soft organs of your body. The brain is protected by the skull. The heart & the lungs by the thin long bones in your chest called

the ribs.

6

Movement

Joints in different bones help in movement of different body parts . Though the individual bones are hard, several of them can move

at places where they are joined to the other bones. That is why you can move your arms, legs, fingers & many other

parts of your body.

7

Making blood cells

Bones of skeleton contain bone marrow where

Blood cells are made .

13

The skull

It contains holes for your eyes, ears, nose and mouth .

The upper part is made up of eight flat bones .

The only bone in the human body not connected to another is the

hyoid a V-shaped bone located at the base of the tongue .

Instead it is connected to the skull by ligaments and muscles .

The face and jaw contain 14 bones .

It functions is to support the tongue and its muscles .

The lower jaw bone is the movable bone in the skull .

It enables you to chew your food and talk .

14

The spine

The spine consists of thirty three small bones called vertebrae . The backbone is also called the spine or the vertebral column . The delicate organ of your body called the spinal cord passes

through these holes . Thus the backbone protects the spinal cord . This is why you can bend and twist your back The backbone attached to the base of the skull. It forms central supporting rod for the skeleton . Each vertebrate has a hole in it . It is not smooth because it is made up of a number of small bones .

15

The rib cage

The ribs are thin, flat, curve bone that form a protective cage around the organs in the upper part of the body. This is called rib cage.

The rib cage consists of 24 bones arranged in 12 pairs. The last two pairs that are joined to the breast bone called floating

ribs. Its also protect parts of the stomach & the kidneys. All of them are joined to the back bone at the back.

16

The limbs

Nearly half of your bones are in our hands, wrists, feet & ankles. The longest bone of our body is the thigh or the femur. The femur is attached to the hip bone through the hip joint. The humerus is attached to the vertebral column through the

collar bone & the shoulder bone.
