Oh, look! I made an instrument! What original

name shall I call it?

In 1809, Antione-Joseph Sax, a Belgian instrument maker, created the saxophone.

March 20, 1846 is the date the saxophone was patented, although it wasn’t displayed until 1841 when it was shown to Hector Berlioz.

Oh that’s pretty!

Sax moved to Paris in 1842 after introducing the saxophone to Berloiz to present the instrument to the rest of the world.

This is soooo not Belgium

Soon after, the creation of all fourteen kinds of saxophones happened, including the C Soprano, E Flat Alto, C Tenor, B Flat Bass, and F Contrabass. They all were a different size and shape.

I invented those haha.

In 1845, the saxophone was finally accepted into the band.

That same year, the year of “Battle of the Bands,” Sax decided to use the opportunity and display how the saxophone could change the tone of the band.

Oh, we’re going to win with

these fabulous saxophones.

Although Sax’s band was smaller than the competition, the French Army band, they still overwhelmed the crowd with the different sound that included the saxophone.

They sound great!

I want to play the

saxophone!

I love the new

instrument.

Although the saxophone sounded good, it needed to be changed. The sax was designed with a smooth, mellow, balanced tone originally, but it needed to be changed to compete with trumpets, drums, and other noises.

Why is the saxophone

so soft?

The mouthpiece was changed so it was smaller and more parallel. This made the sound louder and more obnoxious, and it sounded better in jazz and dance music.

The saxophone is now thought of a primarily jazz instrument, but it is also used in orchestras, concert bands, and marching bands. It’s my favorite instrument, since I play it!
