Technology Day 2008Route 110 Adventureland

St. Ignatius Loyola School’s 7th Grade students participated in the Diocesan

sponsored “Technology Day” on October 8, 2008.

Technology is human innovation in action and influences our lives daily. The goal of “Technology Day” was to have the students

explore the applications of technology while having fun at

Adventureland Amusement Park.

Each student was given a packet which asked them to complete activities to show how scientific principles could be applied to amusement park rides.

“They Go Bump in the Night” Bumper Cars – This activity directed the students to take a close look at the safety features found in bumper cars to determine how riders are protected from injury.

“High in the Sky Pirate Ship” – The Pirate Ship ride is a large pendulum that swings back and forth gradually increasing in height. On this ride students used an altimeter to determine the height of each swing as it increased and decreased.

“On the Level on the Waveswing” – A device called a level was attached to each seat on the Waveswing. A level is used to check if a surface is parallel to the earth. The students learned how the level works and what it is used for as part of this activity. They recorded the number of degrees off center they were at different points in the ride.

“Adventure Falls or Why Doesn’t This Thing Get Stuck in the Groove?” – When riding Adventure Falls Log Flume Ride the students observed its operation and tried to determine why the logs do not get stuck in the flume.
