SPEECH PACKAGES

By the end of today’s lesson you will be able to:

•Identify what a speech package is.

•Suggest different types of speech packages found on radio programmes / stations.

•To analyse speech packages in terms of genre / subject / demographic & contents

In pairs research your specified radio station for presentation to the class

(you have 15 minutes)

Please comment on:

•Demographic (who listens to the station)

•Types of Shows (Scheduling)

•Local / Regional / National

•Music Policy (if any)

What is a speech package?

A factual pre-recorded component of a radio programme.

It’s purpose is to provide listeners with information about a certain topic.

What radio stations can I hear a Speech Package?

Speech packages can be found on a variety radio stations and radio

programmes from all BBC stations to more specialist radio stations such as

talk sport and regional/local radio stations run by students or

communities.

Amongst many, they can appear on the following types of

programmes:

News BulletinsLonger News Programmes

Current Affairs ProgrammesMagazine Shows

Magazine Programmes

Magazine Programmes are programmes that present a

variety of topics, usually on current events/topics, in a

format that often includes interviews and commentary.

Such topics could be sport, news or music.

Current Affairs Programme

A programme that contains explanation and analysis of current events and issues.

including material dealing with political or industrial controversy or with public policy.

Also included are investigative programmes with contemporary significance

the different types of Radio Station.

Talk about:

• A Radio Station (such as Radio 4)

• Its Demographic (such as middle class, 30+)

• Programmes that have speech packages in them (e.g. The Politics Show) and their genre, topic, purpose.

•Details of these speech packages. (genre, topic, content, contributors)

You need to provide more detail for these headings. Use the points for RF 1 PowerPoint (on Blackboard) to help you write in detail for these bullet points.
