Letter Naming Fluency

Phoneme Segmentation Fluency

phonemes = sounds you say a word and have the child say the separate sounds (you say: cat child says: /c/ /a/ /t/

Nonsense Word Fluency Blending sounds together to make a word

• Say sounds and have child tell you the word (ex: you say: /c/ /a/ /t/ child says: /cat/)

Word Use Fluency Increase vocabulary by using words in well formed sentences

• Use sight words ( ride: I ride with my mom to school.)

Spell a Sound Checking to see if child can apply alphabet knowledge in writing

• Say a sound – student writes the letter or letters to spell the sound

• Check to see if your child uses uppercase or lowercase

Why Language Instruction? Language instruction must stay ahead of reading instruction at the beginning level. The children’s

language skills must stay ahead of what they are decoding in print so that they always understand what they read. This program emphasizes language as a means of describing the world and as a tool for thinking and solving problems.
