Surrounded by hills, Iaşi (the Municipality) - historically also named IASS, Iaшii, Iassy - is the main city of Iaşi County and the main urban centre in northeastern Romania.

The city was the capital of Moldavia (Moldova) between 1564 and 1859, one of the two capitals of the Romanian United Principalities between 1859 and 1862 and of the Romania country between 1916 and 1918.
