• Anticipated benefits and pitfalls
Example
John Carroll (1963, 1989) has synthesized much of the research on learning theory into his model of school learning. According to this model, as shown in Figure 1, there are five elements that contribute to academic achievement:
• 1. Aptitude refers to the students' general abilities to learn. • 2. Ability to understand instruction refers to the students' knowledge of prerequisite skills and
information needed to understand a unit of instruction.• 3. Perseverance refers to the amount of time students are willing to spend actively participating
in the learning process.• 4. Opportunity refers to the amount of time available for learning. It could include homework time
as well as time in class.• 5. Quality of instruction refers to the effectiveness with which the unit of instruction is actually
delivered.• ,
Against this model, emerges an interest in time as the key determinant in learning
Time
Time refers to time-on- task i.e. engaged time (on his own) and active learning time (with others). Thus the expression “quality time.”
Quality time seems to be a variable in parenting too. This study is keen to examine how Carroll’s Model of Learning, which informed classroom instruction, can be used to guide the process of parenting. Specifically, the study aims to answer the following questions:
Q1
Q2
Q3
A qualitative approach will be employed to observe a group of children with different “social achievements”; well adapted, adapted and maladapted. An ethnographic methodology is proposed for better insights
Findings should inform us on means to attend to individual differences in social aptitudes and achievements. Efforts can be made to vary the quality of parenting; in particular the amount and frequency of instruction (guidance and counselling) and learning opportunities and the attending perseverance to obtain more optimal outcomes for the different aptitudes
Writing Tips• Gives clear and concise introduction to the topic
• States main research questions
• Summarizes basic arguments
• Lists basic research materials
Audience: Convince reader to award candidature, grant
Style: Formal; 3rd person, exudes confidence
Length: 2 pages (1000 words)
Outcome/ Expectation?
• Scholarly; good understanding of the discipline under investigation (comprehensive or a focused/ specialized review of literature that is well framed)
• Thought process; rigorous, robust and relevant (evidence of depth in analysis, synthesis and evaluation)
• Direction; for better strategies, practices, outcomes or improved tomorrow (brief indication of research questions, methodology of enquiry)
