Objective- Students will have an understanding of the importance of

recognizing audience as a critical reader.

Go through the Power Point and with a critical eye, look at and read the magazine covers presented.

Choose two magazine covers to write about.

In the discussion forum titled “Critical Reader”, answer the following questions about each of the magazine covers you chose: What magazine did you chose? How does the magazine portray the person/activity on the cover? What is the intended demographic of this magazine? (i.e. Who is the

intended audience?) How do you know? What could be changed on this magazine cover to appeal to a different

demographic? Any thoughts on the magazine covers? Be sure to answer the questions appropriately for an academic forum.

Please answer in complete sentences and in approximately 150-200 words for each magazine cover.

Respond reflectively to two of your classmates’ postings.

All magazine covers are real and are not doctored. The sources are from the magazine websites themselves.

Most newspapers are written on a fourth grade reading level.

Reader’s Digest and TV Guide are written on a ninth grade reading level.

For what reading level are these magazines written? Does that give us insight to the intended audience/readership of these magazines?

Always consider your target audience.

Writing in college has a very specific target audience- your classmates or your professor/instructor. Particularly when writing essays , your professor or instructor expects you to write formally (using proper etiquette, grammar, style, and tone).

If you were writing a letter to the President of the United States, or even the President of your company, you would not use exclamation points and emoticons. Would you? You would not do this when writing for your professor / instructor either.
