Sometimes it is best to just keep the format simple to focus on the composition within the frame.

Framed Photograph

If your pictures are part of a narrative or work well as a series, consider mounting your photographs as a multiple composition. Try to keep the format constant I.e. portrait or landscape, but avoid both as it will disrupt the rhythm for the viewer.

Multiples

Some photographers, such as Wolfgang Tillmans, are known for creating asymmetrical displays of their images that appear to have a random order.

The Panorama

Some artists like to explore the relationship between words and images, playing with the construction of visual and written language: Consider how an image changes when presented next to a word or paragraph of text.

The photograph is a 2D material that can be manipulated through stitching, folding, bending glueing, cutting, etc… to create a 3D or relief form.

By using a light-sensitive emulsion you can paint onto another surface and expose an image in the darkroom onto any surface (within reason).

Play with the convention

This student has decided to create a 3D frame with mirrors that creates another dimension to the work and means of viewing a photograph.

Try presenting the image as a reflection or tromp-l’oeil.

Think about the architectural space as being an extension of the frame.

Photographic Installation

The good old book format has the advantage of making the experience of viewing private and allows the reader to flick back and forth. Consider whether it should be single or double-sided, matt or glossy and the layout of images.
