A Sustainable vision for PembrokeEnergy supply:
Heat, electricity, waste to energy, biomassEnergy demand:
Laundry, insulation, windows, measuring and monitoring, smart controls, behavior change, lighting
Water:Grey water, rainwater, toilets, timers, temperatures, flow
restrictor, laundryWaste and Recycling:
Composting, sorting, audits, student swap scheme, behaviorManagement:
Oranization, rules, surveys, incentives
Greening the heating supply
If we can not insulate and reduce heating demand through envelope improvements, we can green the
heating supply
Current situation:
Heating is the primary energy user at Pembroke College
Technologies to examine
Solar thermalAir source heat pumps
Geothermal or Ground source heat pumps
Combined heat and power CHPNew Radiative technologies
Monitoring and metering: accounting for resource use
We can only optimise the environmental performance of Pembroke College if we
have sufficient knowledge of consumption
Current situation:
Monthly manual meter readings of the overall site
for gas and electricity
Aim:
Short interval, remotely read data with appropriate spacial granularity
For gas, electricity and water
Strategy:
1. Understanding the baseload and locating waste of resource
2. Informing decisions for resource management
3. Visualising consumption in an innovative way and providing feedback in order to
achieve behaviour-change
Positive potential:
Already motivated and concerned staff and students
Organised in the Environmental Awareness Commitee
