Regular verbs are verbs that end with -edRegular verbs are verbs that end with -ed

Simple form verbs:

walk

study

cry

live

Past tense verbs:

walked

studied

cried

lived

Rules for adding –ed:Rules for adding –ed: Add –ed to most verbs

Drop the “e” and add “ed” to verbs that end with “e” (smile = smiled).

Drop the “y” and add –ied to verbs that end with a consonant + “y” (study = studied).

Double the consonant and add –ed to verbs that are monosyllables and end consonant + vowel + consonant (stop = stopped).

Double the consonant and add –ed to verbs that have more than 1 syllable, end consonant + vowel + consonant and the last syllable is stressed (prefer = preferred).

The –ed ending in English has three different sounds:

/t/: when the last sound of the verb is /k, p, ch, sh, f, h, s/ walked, talked, jumped

/d/: when the last sound of the verb is /b, g, l, m, n, r, v, w, y, z, vowel/ played, loved, planned

/id/: when the verb finishes in “t” or “d” invited, waited decided....
